The Walk On

As the Summer sun rinses over the town of Guildford, an unimposing shadow is cast across the morning pavement. Stand still with heavy lided eyes towards the horizon, Hashbrown is home. It is here where he spent hours absorbing and internalizing seminal works of the past and near present, frantically scouring radio frequencies in search of ’anything’, and clumsily dissecting records only to reassemble them as (what he deems) ‘paraphrased songs’. More importantly, it is here where the young producer heard an inner voice calling him to action and he responded with The Walk On. This is where Hashbrown’s story begins.

Initially archived on the private label Outerbound Recordings and circulated amongst immediate family and likeminded artists, The Walk On is now being presented to listeners (close to half a decade later) in its raw and unadulterated form. Consisting of 33 snippet-like tracks, assembled by a then-16 year old Hashbrown, The Walk On documents the meek and humble beginnings of the producer’s foray into recorded material.

Presented in a simple beat tape format, The Walk On is a personal ode to all sources that have fueled the young producer’s inner call to action. From specific people, places, sounds, and crystallized moments/memories, it is this sense of intimate history that resonates throughout his works. Equipped with a secondhand sampler and the meager offerings of a new jack’s crate, Hashbrown attempts to translate his sources of inspiration into brief musical tributes/dedications. From the declaratory promise of commitment (never gonna stay) to the jubilant rejoicing of life (song of yesterday); from dust-drenched moments of clarity (drawnblank) to the foreboding stride of repentance (BNC), each track conveys the emotional candidness and honesty that constitutes the very essence of The Walk On.

Minimalistic and concise in nature, each track is constructed from key passages of a single song. With the careful manipulation of basic elements, samples are given the opportunity to exist in a new light and context. Even obvious and familiar sound sources are reconceived and re-conceptualized. Some samples are staggeringly reshaped (changing times) and reconfigured (fout), while others are deliberately subtle (le bouncepass) and restrained (solace). Eschewing a big drum and filtering ethos, the music instead relies the producer’s ability to identify the most potent of fragments upon which variations/combinations are built and expanded. It is in these variations where lines frequently blur into sudden vocal interjections only to disappear back into grooves undisturbed. Compiled and sequenced to form a much larger corps d‘oeuvre, The Walk On serves as the maiden entry in the Walk On/Off series, instituting the principles and aesthetics from which the series evolves.

Compelled by the heartfelt reception of The Walk Off, Hashbrown once again sought the guiding outreach of Jellyfish Recordings creative director Eli Muro. The decision to finally present the completed series (albeit in reverse order and 3 years removed from The Walk Off) came sudden in a revelatory manner, prompting the producer to hastily inquire about an impromptu release. Fortunately Muro was receptive and kindly accommodated the request. Hopeful that the listener will be able to discern and define the commonalities and universal truths contained in the series, Hashbrown concludes, “ I once read somewhere: To find new things, go down an old path”.

At the present time, Hashbrown is preparing an upcoming split project with kindred ‘chop up’ spirit Dr. Nacho, as well his own newly born venture as Newton Waves. Stay tuned!
